Science & Memory - Multimedia climate change storytelling

OVERVIEW:

In July of 2014, I spent a month in the small town of Cordova, Alaska with four professors and eighteen other UOSOJC students to tell the story of climate change through multimedia pieces.

Climate change is such a huge and complicated topic that we knew could not be covered for a 3 year long project. The strategy team that I was a part of was assigned to combine the data behind science and the memory of locals in Cordova to bring a human connection to a complex concept.

EXECUTION:

While I was in Alaska, I spent days brainstorming as a content strategist, blogging, researching in the worlds tiniest public library, and trying to understand how to create a balance between useful and beautiful storytelling. One of the most rewarding experiences from the trip was having the opportunity to speak to locals and scientists to understand the topic on a much deeper level than the internet could ever provide you.

I helped develop strategy and guided a team of journalists to produce work with a balance of science and memory, as well as a connection back to home. I also produced content for our blog, social media, and website.

My months following in Oregon were filled with producing interactive media components such as timelines, and curating a glossary that gives scientific context to our stories. I have also presented at several research symposiums to increase public awareness of the project and to strengthen relationships with local scientists for next year's group.

RESULTS:

  • Team received UO Innovation and Impact Award.

  • Project received funding and expanded for 5 years.
